Agency History: | May Alice Mead was born on July 13, 1888 in Leoti, Kansas, to Albert E. Mead and Elizabeth E. Brown. She moved with her parents to Blaine, Washington Territory in 1889. She then gained three brothers, Rollin Carlton in 1893, Wendell Phillips in 1891, and William Damon in 1896. After her mother Elizabeth died in 1898, her father remarried Mina Jane Hosmer Pifer in 1899. May’s father was elected Governor of Washington State in 1904, and the family lived in Olympia during his governorship. May Mead studied Nursing at the University of Washington and later became the School Nurse at Washington State Normal School in Bellingham, Washington, and College Nurse when it became Western Washington College. She died January 8, 1949. |
