Digital Archives Policies

The Digital Archives will be performing system maintenance on Wednesday, November 20th beginning at 5:00 PM PST and ending at 8:00 PM PST. During this time our ecommerce system will be unavailable. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Electronic Records Access:

Records transferred to the Archives are open to the public for research under the terms of the Public Records Act and other applicable statutes. Electronic records not exempt from public disclosure may be viewed free of charge at the Digital Archives, 960 Washington St, Cheney, WA 99004, during normal business hours.

Bulk Records Export Requests:

Thank you for requesting records from the Washington State Archives. The records you have requested are currently available free of charge at http://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/, consequently, we consider your request to be fulfilled.

It is the mandate of the Archives to collect, preserve and make available, the valuable legal and historical records of the State of Washington. In achieving this purpose, the Archives is one of the nation’s top archival facilities.

Through the initiative of Secretary of State Sam Reed, in 2004 we became the first state archives to build from the ground up an electronic system to preserve the billions of electronic records in the custody of state and local government agencies.

Our goal, from the beginning, focused on making our public records available to everyone via the world-wide web, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, and 365 days a year. By accomplishing this goal, we are not only meeting the mandate of the Archives, but by displaying the records on-line where they can be searched, viewed, printed and downloaded free of charge, we are also meeting the public disclosure requirements of the State of Washington.

Thank you for your interest in the Washington State Archives.

Social Security Numbers:

The Digital Archives will not knowingly display scanned images or indexes which contain a living person’s social security number. If an agency submits a document containing a social security number, the Digital Archives will hide the image from public view. This personal identifying information is exempt from public inspection and copying under RCW 42.56.230.
