Treasured Candy Map Uncovered

The Davenport Candycrafts' Comic Hysterical Map, 1935. Secretary of State, Corporations Division, Trademarks.

The Davenport Candycrafts’ Comic Map and its trade-mark application are preserved in the Washington State Archives Trademark Collection. This “Hysterical” map depicts the Pacific Northwest as seen through a drawing of the Lindgren Brothers of Spokane Company that was based in Spokane, Washington. The artwork was commissioned in 1935 as a candy box cover celebrating Spokane’s Davenport Hotel and Candy Company. The Candycrafts’ Comic Map has all the flair and humor for which the Lindgren Brothers of Spokane “Hysterical” maps were famous. Images of note include a stork delivering a proclamation that the Great Depression’s given way to a conception boom and a covered wagon traversing the Old Oregon Trail. The featured theme is Spokane’s Davenport Hotel and Candies. The map spans the geographical Pacific Northwest from the peaks of Banff, Canada to the valley of Boise, Idaho and from the Pacific Ocean to Yellowstone National Park. The Trademark Records Collection houses active and inactive trademark records filed with the Secretary of State’s Office, Corporations Division from 1888 to 2011. The State Archives does not own copyrights for creative works submitted with Trademark applications within its collections.
