Camp Walter C. Lee was located in Murray, Washington. Created in 1889, soldiers stationed at the camp were deployed during the Spanish-American War, the Philippine Insurrection, the Mexican American War, and World War One. Camp Walter C. Lee was later succeeded by Camp Murray. This scrapbook documents a training exercise in 1921 for the 146th Field Artillery. The photographs provide a glimpse of life in the National Guard in the interwar period. Also showcased is the combination of mechanized and equine transport. Early automobiles and horses worked in tandem. Although the cars in the images are mostly for the transportation of observers to the exercises, soldiers can be seen utilizing the vehicles for transportation and the carrying of baggage in at least two images. The collection contains images of small field guns to large coastal defense guns.
